Well well well.....lookie who screwed up again! I quit smoking, I should be able to quit eating so damn much. Seems like I'm just craving the heck out of my Lays BBQ potato chips, but I'm not eating them. Instead it's like I keep eating everything/anything else but the craving is still there so I eat everything/anything else again. I almost feel like I'm eating MORE since I started this than less. Then I run my calorie progress calculator, and find that it's not working. I needed to go back to each day since I started and add another 800 calories to bring it to a correct number. I thought to myself that this was because I'm now over 40 and I bet my metabolism has something to do with it. I found a website that shows how to calculate for your metabolism slowing down but I couldn't understand the formula. So I saved it for later and I will work it out in time.
Anyhow...here's the deal. I've been "dieting" (using the term very very loosly) for 21 days and have lost only 1 pound. In the time I've been dorking around with this I've lost weight, put it back on, and lost it again. I' will continue to keep track of what I'm doing here, but I need to put on my thinking cap and work out why I'm having so much trouble with the snacking thing. I find myself spending minutes upon minutes in stores looking at the snacks, picking them up, putting them down, having conversations with them in my head. In the end, I win and put them back and walk out without them, but then come home and eat 500 calories worth of nuts, because it's not satisfying my crave.
This sucks!
I'll post my calories later.

I almost put it all back on. That fast. Overeating is an awful habit. Once I start, I just can't stop. But tomorrow is another day. One day at a time. I am addicted to food and I should treat myself that way.

In order to continue to lose weight at a decent rate you must once a week have a day where you overeat more than the limited daily calorie intake that you are using to lose weight. This way, your body doesn't adjust to the lower calories. If it does this, your weight loss starts to stagnate.
Now saying this, What I have done today IS NOT THE WAY to add in a big day. This is completely over the top. And had I been counting calories as the day was progressing I MAY not have done so badly. Granted, today's food definitely took care of my "big eating day" for the week, but this was way over the top.
The Pizza is gone, so that temptation is out of my life for a while, and those birthday cookies?... Well those are gone too.
Although I'm upset that I ate so much yesterday, I'm not killing myself over it, because each day is a new day. And I also am prepared that tomorrow my weight will go up a pound. It takes 1500 calories less than you normally eat to lose a pound. Same thing to gain. 1500 calories more and poof, you're bigger...LOL With my pizza weekend and cookies, I should see the pound tomorrow and maybe the next day too!!!
Tomorrow's another day!!! xoxoxo

Look at the calories for pizza! Even though I ate way less variety than usual, the calories are immense. And I would normally, eat 1/2 the pizza at dinner, and then wake up in the middle of the night and have another couple pieces. This would happen maybe once or twice a month. There's part of the reason for my becoming a fat fat fatty. :o)

Not just cuz I'm fat but because I want to feel better too. And why should I take medicine when I can try to fix things within myself. We shall see how far this takes me, but I sincerely hope that I will be able to stick with it this time.
I've installed my software (You Are In Control Diet Tools) and have started counting calories. We went to the grocery store today, and bought some healthy foods.

The Perfect Meal?
Here's an example of the perfect meal you can make at home. It has everything you need for
better health.
What you'll need is:
1 9-10 ounce bag of baby spinach
1 can of wild Alaskan pink salmon
1-2 teaspoons of olive oil
1-2 teaspoons of balsamic vinegar
1/2-3/4 cup of brown rice
Here's a breakdown of each food's health benefits:
Spinach - this green leaf is packed with phytonutrients, vitamins and fiber - and it's low in calories.
Wild Alaskan Pink Salmon - yes, canned! It tastes better than you think. The reason this is recommended is because the food is a powerhouse of good fats, protein and omega-3's and is low in calories and carbohydrates. The salmon you would normally buy is potentially high in mercury, which is bad. This Wild Alaskan form is free of mercury...and it's inexpensive.
In case you're wondering, Omega-3's are vital for healthy weight loss, brain health and a healthy cardiovascular system.
Olive Oil - full of good fat which your body does need. When you buy olive oil, make sure it's 100% authentic. Some brands are now mixing olive oil with refined oils...the end result is olive oil, but not really.
Balsamic Vinegar - vinegar reportedly controls your blood sugar level when eating which is important for overall health. Furthermore, it gives the meal more taste.
Brown Rice - whole grains are full of vitamins and fiber. Check out Uncle Ben's instant brown rice...it's pretty good and quick to make.
Making the meal is easy. You simply lay the spinach out on a platter- you can more or less use however much you want- and drizzle 1-2 teaspoons of olive oil and balsamic vinegar over the spinach.
Let this sit for 10 minutes or so - this gives the spinach a chance to soak up the oil and vinegar. While this is sitting, cook the brown rice and open up the can of salmon.
When ready, simply spread the salmon over the spinach and put the brown rice either on the side or in a separate bowl.
And now the best part of all - ENJOY!
This meal will take you 15 minutes max to make and each bite will nourish your body from the inside out. And once you get used to eating healthy, you'll find yourself experimenting with all types of different meals.

I'm on a Quest for foods I can eat, enjoy, and not walk away from
I don't like to prepare my own food. I do make meals for hubby and I, but I really don't like to do it. I'm one of those people who'd be much happier going to the cupboard and pulling out something that I just add water and put it into the microwave. That's part of the reason that this will/has been such an issue for me. I like frozen dinners too, but the cost is too much.

First high cholesterol, then high blood pressure.
I went to the Dr. last week (May 8th, 2010) after what I found out about in my post about High Cholesterol and this one about Coq10 and High Cholesterol. He gave me a prescription for some Statin drug, and gave me instructions on how to take it. That night I took my coQ10 and my Statin drug and went to bed. I had a little trouble sleeping because of restless legs, so I thought that the next day I'd take the coq10 in the morning instead of directly with the statin.
Sunday went along without incident, but then late Sunday night/early Monday morning around 4am I woke up with my world spinning. Not I, just everything around me. I had Vertigo and immediately the nausea came. I tried to walk to the bathroom when I found that I couldn't balance myself, and then I got scared, and the ice cold shiver came over me.
I'm used to having minor things go wrong with me, but I do freak out and panic easy over things that I've not experienced before. Though I've been dizzy in my past, it's never been anything that lasted longer than a couple of seconds.
I decided it was from the Statin, because it was the only thing that had changed. I decided wrong, because after 6 days of feeling dizzy, and weak, I went back to the doctor and found that it's my blood pressure. I've been watching it as I've been doing to my doctor. He's not said anything, but I keep asking the assistant after she takes it so I can keep track of it. It has steadily gone up by 20 points each doctor visit. And this last one was dramatic. On the 8th my BP was 160/? and then yesterday May 15, it was 180/108.
I'm now on a diuretic, and something for my dizziness, and not taking the statins. I told my doctor that I wanted to get my blood pressure under control before the cholesterol. He agreed. Really I decided that I didn't want to take the statin at all, but thought this was a good way to put it off since I had basically just asked for it a week ago..lol.
Today, I feel a bit dizzy, and not as scared as I was because now I have an answer. But I've gone into a little shell for a bit just to let myself deal with what's going on and try to get my mind wrapped around it.

Once the eggs have cooked, remove them from the hot water, and place into a container of ice water or cold, running water. This stops the eggs from cooking. Cool completely, about 15 minutes.
Store in refrigerator up to 1 week.
Peel one egg right away... just for the sheer joy of unbroken eggs!

Better look while you can!
I couldn't believe I was doing it so I thought I'd better take a picture or it would fall the way of a myth.
Yes, it's true, it's me..........eating a carrot. I know I know, it's shocking, and you may need to look away. But for those who are brave and unafraid to see the unseen, to know the unknown, here it is.
You'd better take a nap now, you must be exhausted.

High Cholesterol and Xanthomas
Image by Getty Images via DaylifeFor years I've had these little buttons on my heals. Tiny little bumps, 3 on each foot, not discolored or ugly or anything, just these little bumps, the largest being the size of a pea and the smallest being the size of a pin head. I also have a slight thickening on the back of my heels, where the Achilles tendon is. I thought this was because I exercised that area so often, and here it turns out that it too is the beginning of a Xanthoma. Holy Crap!
I've found out today that they are called Xanthomas. And I've also found that Xanthomas are caused by various things, but one thing that stuck out at me was hypercholesterolaemia. And since I know I was diagnosed with high cholesterol years ago, and only took the medicine for a couple of months, that my cholesterol must be necessarily high again. And probably even higher than before because since that time I've discovered the joys of steak and pork chops. Eeee gads.
So now I must decide, at my next doctor visit, do I ask to be put on a long term prescription for cholesterol lowering drugs (which did work btw) or do I try to self heal with Fish Oil and diet. The prescription will guarantee that my levels will go down without me doing anything else. But the self-heal will help me in more ways than just cholesterol.
I'll have to ask my husband about his opinion when he gets home.
CoQ10 and High Colesterol
Then that made me remeber some thing from when I was researching it for Mac (he's on a steady dose of 200mg per day now). Once thing that I found was that CoQ10 diminishes with age and that it's something that your body produces naturally. A young person's body creates the full needed amount, but as we get older, we start to become deficient.
Another thing that I learned is that one of the benefits of CoQ10 is that it give the muscles the energy they need in order to function. And then my mind started to travel to when I went to the doctor and he told me that I have very high cholesterol.
He was so worried that he had me immediately drive to the office and get cholesterol lowering drugs. And when that happened, it reminded me of something else that I had read about CoQ10 and cholesterol lowering drugs. Apparently the ingredient that acts as a binder to remove cholesterol also binds CoQ10, which is why many people who take these types of drugs, have to change them or quit taking them completely. The symptoms being severe muscle pain. And since the heart is a muscle, this is in my opinion a very very serious issue. And the cause of the muscle pain in this instance, in my assertion is the lack of CoQ10.
Here in America, our doctors do not put these two things together, but in other countries they do. When a cholesterol lowering drug is prescribed so is a Coq10 supplement. So when my doctor put me on my medication I immediate got myself some CoQ10. And you know, when I took it together with the cholesterol lowering drug, I did not get the heart palpitations. (Which to me was more confirmation that cholesterol lowering drugs do indeed deplete our reserves of CoQ10)
Ok....now after ALLLLL of that, here's my new thought. If cholesterol lowering drugs bind to the same "whatevers" that CoQ10 do, might it be possible that by increasing the dose of CoQ10 may indeed us up the "whatevers" so that they are not available for the cholesterol to bind to?
I'm so scientific aren't I? LMAO I don't know what things are called, but I'm wondering, I think this might make sense! I haven't researched any of this, just putting 2 and 2 together in my mixed up melon, but maybe one day I may look into it and see if there's any possibility.
I took a 30mg CoQ10 today. We'll see if I can handle it without palpitations. :o)

Wanted to Say Last Night
The only bad part was that I had trouble sleeping last night. Mac reminded me this morning that we ate pretty late. Which we did, we finished eating around 7:30 pm and then I was trying to go to sleep at 10pm.
It's 9am now I'm having a cup of coffee with cream and splenda. I have a hard boiled egg in the fridge that I'll eat for breakfast and see how that works.
After that I'm going to start sculpting another chibi. Here's a picture of the one I sculpted yesterday.
Talk to you later!

I'm learning....
Well, it's lunch time, and I went to see what I could eat. Almost everything I have in my cupboard is loaded with carbs. Then I thought maybe if I found the ratio of protein that's needed to eat with carbs, maybe I could get away with eating some of the crap I have here. So I looked it up, and it's like 50g carbs to 25g protein.
And what I ate was 2 bean and cheese burritos---totally of 75 carbs and 8 protein. So me, in my infinite stupidity started looking for about 50 grams of protein to even out the meal. OMG, it's not possible. Even a steak has only about 30 grams. So now I'm starting to see this pattern.
I gave up on finding the protein to match the carbs, and just had my two burritos. It's only been about 10 minutes and my eyes are feeling like they need to close. I'm very sleepy, and I've had 2 cups of caffeinated coffee this morning.
I'll just keep record of what I see happening and maybe I'll be able to come up with something useful. You know, I thought that beans had a lot of protein, but apparently my idea of a LOT isn't on par.
Anyhow....I'm off for now. Chibi's done and the alarm is beeping for me to go get him out of the oven. (gonna try and steal a 30 minute nap too)

Tired After Eating
After talking with my mom I mentioned about getting sleepy after eating pancakes. And she said that it didn't really make sense. I thought everyone did. You know like getting sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner. But apparently I'm strange and I didn't know that. (I know I'm strange, I meant I didn't know the way my body reacts to pancakes was strange)
Well I did some looking on the web today to see what I could find out. I've only been looking for an hour or so, but here's what I've come up with so far. I get tired after eating pancakes because of the double carbs....carbs from the syrup, carbs from the pancake flour. And because I'm so fat, my body had developed a dislike for sugars. Meaning, I think I'm pre-diabetic. And I need to lose weight and cut back on the carbs.
I always thought if I used Splenda then all the other sugars would be ok, because of cutting out the drink ones. Well since I quit smoking, I started drinking a LOT more regular pop. Like 2 a day with sugar. I'm eating pop-tarts for snacks. Ice cream sandwiches. Pancakes (as you know), chocolate. etc etc. Plus NOODLES, Rice, breads.
Basically I think I'm a carboholic which is pushing me towards diabetes. Sooo That's why I'm constantly tired after I eat.
Now what I am I gonna do about it? Well, at least today (because that's the only way, one day at a time) I'm not going to have any non-diet cola. I'm not going to have an ice cream sandwich and I'm not going to have a pop tart. And I'm going to take a look at what I had planned for dinner and see what I can do about it.
And since I adore snacking, I'm going to try to find something veggie or fruity that I can snack on that takes time. Maybe celery, or apple. That's is so far, and I guess instead of doing double chin exercises I should be just dieting.
See.....it's really good to have self esteem that allows you to know the truth about your appearance and not to be ashamed because you're not one of the "beautiful" people, but I need to realize that being healthy isn't about giving in to what people expect of me. It's about..well...being healthy...LOL.
I heard on the news yesterday that some people do church diets, where they use prayer to help them lose weight. That's what I'm going to do. I tried to quit smoking for years, but never could until I was trying to help Mac after a health scare. It was so easy because I was doing it for him that I couldn't believe it. Well, I've learned from that that I guess it takes a little more help for me. So I'm going to ask God for His help to give me strength. Common Maddy, you can do it!

280 calories of food that totally stuffed me from hungry to painful.
Amy's Teriyaki Tofu Bowl
Let me tell you, I HAVE an appetite, and usually even after I've eaten I still want just a little bit more of something. I'm sure a lot of it is mental, but I wanted to share that this particular meal DID IT for me. I'm full.
YAY! I'm actually full
